Inland Taipan

The Most Venomous Snake in The World

What is the deadliest snake in the world?  Where do they come from?  What do they eat?  What to do if you get bitten?

In this article, we will go through all of these questions and more.

WHAT IS THE DEADLIEST SNAKE IN THE WORLD?

Let us get straight to the point.  The most venomous snake in the world is the Inland Taipan.  Although these snakes are the most venomous snakes they are not the most dangerous.

Inland Taipan

Inland Taipan

The Inland Taipans venom is 300 times more toxic than the Rattle Snake.  The Inland Taipans bite has enough punch to kill 70 human beings in one go.  It has enough venom to kill 130 000 rats.

MORE ABOUT THE INLAND TAIPAN

The Inland Taipan was first discovered in 1879  by Frederick McCoy in Victoria up near Mildura.  They were first named the Small Scaled Brown Snake.  They were all considered to be a Brown Snake until 1896 when a zoologist then named them the Black Snake. In 1981 it was discovered that these snakes were closer to the Coastal Taipan and then it was named the Inland Taipan.  These snakes love to burrow and hide in an unused rat hole.  They normally will escape from the heat but also do escape from predators.

You would not think that the most venomous snake in the world has a predator.  The King Brown snake and the Perentie Lizard love eating the Inland Taipan.

INLAND TAIPAN SIZE

The Inland Taipan size will vary from 5.5 feet to 9 feet long.  Most of these snakes will take up to 3 years to grow to their full length. Inland Taipan weight when fully grown is around 5 pounds.

INLAND TAIPAN VS BLACK MAMBA

The Inland Taipans venom is more venomous than that of the Black Mamba.  That, however, does not mean that the Inland Taipan is more dangerous.  The Black Mamba is about 4 times more aggressive than the Inland Taipan.  They will attack you without thinking too hard about it.

BLACK MAMBA

BLACK MAMBA

There are also many more reported cases of people dying from the Black Mamba bites. There is a couple of reason behind this fact.

The main reason being that Black Mamba antivenom is less available in Africa. Therefore more deaths are reported. Most medical centers in those areas do not cato for Black Mamba bites.  The closest medical center could be 100’s of miles away.

The Inland Taipan is from the inland of Australia.  Most of the Australian population live near the coastal areas so most people do not see them.  Inland areas do not get as many deaths as antivenom is widely available in most medical centers in Australia for immediate treatment.

INLAND TAIPAN BEHAVIOUR

This snake is a very shy snake that will try very hard to escape a situation than attack someone.  Most attacks will happen if the snakes feel that it is in imminent danger.  In nature, they are very gentle creatures only biting when they want to eat.  Other than that they will stay away from anything that moves.  When the snake is threatened too much it will flatten its throat.  This will be a great time to get far away from it.

WHAT DOES THE INLAND TAIPAN EAT

The Inland Taipan will usually go into rat holes and find their food there.  They will then corner their food and strike.  They will then wait until the rat has almost died and then eat it.  Their strike causes death in a couple of seconds.  They will also eat little mice or the odd frog if they come close when they hungry.  Their full diet can be any of the following: rats, mice frogs, and even birds.

INLAND TAIPAN BITE

A bite from the Inland Taipan snake can kill a human being in 45 minutes.  Your life will be in danger if you are bitten in a remote area away from medical treatment.  After a bite from this snake, it will take a few weeks to fully recover.  The snake also will not only strike twice.  They will sometimes strike you 2-5 times with a venom dose on each bite.  Their strike will immediately attack your nervous system.  Some people have reported being paralyzed after recovering with medical treatment.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET BITTEN

  1. Stay calm and do not panic.
  2. If you are close to a hospital make your way immediately.  You should ask someone to assist you to drive.
  3. Take a picture of the snake so you can be sure as to what bit you.  This will help in knowing what anti-venom to take.

INLAND TAIPAN FACTS

  1. The Inland Taipan skin will change depending on the season.  In summer the snake will have a lighter color – almost a yellow color.  In winter the snake will be much darker, almost a dark brown/black color.
  2. This snake is super active in the morning and will prefer hunting at night during summer.
  3. They can live up to 13 years in the wild and up to 22 years in captivity.
  4. No one has ever died from this snakes bite.  One record only 2 people have been bitten by this snake in the wild.  These people were out searching for them.  The other people who got bitten happened while caring for them in captivity.

MOST DANGEROUS SNAKE IN THE WORLD

SAW-SCALED VIPER (Echis Carinatus)

Saw Scaled Vipers

Saw Scaled Vipers

The snake that kills the most people in the world is the Saw-Scaled Viper.  Because of this fact I will say that this is the most dangerous snake in the world.  A snake that kills the most humans has to be the most dangerous.

Let us look deeper into why these snakes kill so many people.

WHERE DO THESE SNAKES COME FROM?

These snakes originate from the northern parts of Africa, Asia, Sri Lanka, and India.  The Saw-Scaled Viper does not grow more than 35 inches in length.  They are very hard to see in the will and are super aggressive and will attack you with the blink of an eye.

In one year nearly 700 000 people will be bitten by this snake.  The reason for this is because they live in the same areas that humans live.  These snakes habitat the same area of land in the middle east as humans do.  Out of the 700 000 bites a year nearly 135 000 people will die.  This is a staggering amount of deaths from one species.

THE BITE

Since an antivenom does not work with these snake bites.  The best thing will be to go to a hospital and let the bite finish its course.  The tissue around the bite will dissolve and the person will have immense pain.  Once bite from this snake can kill 3 grown adults.  This snakes venom is so bad that the snake bite area will often be so bad that fingers or toes will fall off during the healing process.

When bitten swelling will immediately begin and can spread to massive areas afterward.

Most people will take up to six months to recover.  And the majority of time renal failure will occure.

When the snake is threatened it will rub its scales together that will make a unique sound that will warn you.

THEIR BEHAVIOUR

These snakes are nocturnal.  They will hunt 80% of the time in the night.  During the day they will usually be hiding behind a rock or in their hiding place of choice.  There have been some reports of the Saw Scaled hunting during the day time.

These snakes are very aggressive, they will coil themselves up and strike with no notice.  These snakes move very quickly in the sand. Their fastest way of moving is to move sideways also known as sidewinding.

FEEDING TIME

This snake will eat anything from scorpions, centipedes and other insects to mice, rats, and frogs.  They will at times even eat birds.  The Saw-Scaled Viper will almost eat anything that moves around them.

MOST VENOMOUS SNAKE IN THE US

The chances of dying from a venomous snake bite in the USA is almost 0%.  You are more likely to be killed by a strike of lightning than to be killed by a venomous snake.

With the above been said it does not mean that venomous snake in the US must be taken lightly.

The Rattlesnake is the most widely populated snake in the USA and for this reason can be classified as the most dangerous.

The Rattlesnake

Rattlesnake venom is Hemotoxic, this means that this type of venom will attack the red blood cells.  This, in turn, will cause damage to your internal organs and can lead to death if not treated. Relatives of the Mojave Rattler include
the Eastern Diamondback, Western Diamondback,  Sidewinder Timber Rock and pygmy rattlesnakes.  These are all known for the distinctive rattle at the end of the tail. Brass snakes can strike an amazing distance.

CONCLUSION

Knowing the difference between venomous and dangerous is important when dealing with these types of snakes.  Venomous does not always mean that they are dangerous.  Sometimes the most venomous snakes are the shyest snakes and will try their utmost best to escape.  Most of the time they will only strike when they cannot escape.

Dangerous snakes, on the other hand, are very aggressive and will want to bite you.  I would say that a semi venomous snake is more deadly if they are aggressive.
